Since successfully performing Korea’s first open-heart surgery in 1983, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Sejong Hospital has played a pioneering role in shaping the history of cardiac surgery in Korea.

At a time when open-heart surgery was considered extremely challenging, the department achieved 1,000 open-heart surgeries within just three years, reaching this milestone in 1986 through relentless dedication and innovation. To date, Sejong Hospital has accumulated experience in more than 30,000 open-heart surgeries, establishing itself as a national leader in cardiac surgery.

In 1994, based on approximately 10,000 surgical cases, the department successfully performed the first heart transplant in a private hospital in Korea, marking a major turning point in the field. This achievement reflects Sejong Hospital’s accumulated expertise and continues to serve as a foundation for leadership in 21st-century cardiac surgery.

The department also maintains one of the few specialized surgical teams in Korea dedicated to congenital heart disease, contributing significantly to the advancement of pediatric cardiac surgery nationwide.
